Store renovation with respect for a rich history
The establishment of the mobile surf school in the late 1980s by Uwe Jendrusch and Pieternel van der Linde marked the beginning of a successful watersports business. It soon became clear that the surfschool was their passion, and the caravan was replaced by a double-decker bus. Theoretical lessons were taught upstairs, while downstairs there was space for surfers to change clothes.
Gerrit from WSB: “It was obvious that Uwe and Pieternel wanted to settle permanently on the Kabbelaarsbank. Due to the high demand for a real restaurant at the surf center, the plans were changed at the very last moment.” Pieternel adds: “Improvising is truly our strength.”
After many loyal years and continuous development, it was time for a major renovation. The restaurant was completely demolished and replaced by a stylish, contemporary building. The surf shop also received a complete makeover; the space is now twice as large as before. Because the restaurant and the surf shop are now fully connected, they form a pleasant and cohesive whole in look and feel. Additionally, four family-oriented rooms were added, and the office spaces were expanded.
What triggered the renovation?
Gerrit continues: “The various brand shops, each with their own character, made the store feel chaotic. There was no cohesion. Brouwersdam was therefore looking for a flexible interior system that could serve as the basis for all departments. This became a uniform 125 cm wide hanging system that can be used throughout the entire store. WSB has many years of experience in designing winter sports departments for sports retailers.”
What DNA did the client and WSB want to incorporate into the design?
The architecture and unique location of the building were essential. The wooden beams had to remain visible, as well as a warm, homelike atmosphere. A clear layout with strong routing was also crucial.
How did this translate into the interior?
A flexible wall and centerpiece furniture system, complemented by robust and functional elements. Special attention was paid to a clear routing and layout for the different departments. The result is a beautiful, well-organized store.
Finally: was the collaboration a success?
Absolutely. It was a unique collaboration: Brouwersdam’s enthusiastic in-house sales team worked together with our installers. They helped significantly with the installation of the new store interior. Everything was completed within a week.
